Gregorio Rosa Chávez, the first cardinal of El Salvador. He was born in September 1942 in Sociedad, department of Morazán. He held the position of auxiliary bishop of San Salvador. He collaborated closely with the martyred archbishop San Óscar Arnulfo Romero who played a crucial role in defending human rights in his country during a time of military dictatorship (1931-1979). Despite the threats and violence, he did not hesitate to raise his voice against the human rights violations perpetrated by the government and the military.
