The reason for Eucharistic Congresses
Why did Pope Francis choose Ecuador to celebrate the 53rd International Eucharistic Congress in 2024?
Because 2024 marks 150 years since the Consecration of Ecuador to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
What does the Pope expect from the International Eucharistic Congress?
The Holy Father hopes that the experience of this Congress will manifest the fruitfulness of the Eucharist for evangelization and the renewal of faith in Latin America.

The theme that Pope Francis chose is: “Fraternity to heal the world.” Enlightened with the biblical text: “You are all brothers” (Mt 23:8).

What are International Eucharistic Congresses?
The Congresses are an expression of a particular veneration and love of the Universal Church for the Eucharistic Mystery, a source of fraternity and peace. Since the Second Vatican Council, Eucharistic Congresses better demonstrate the “Statio orbis”, that is, where particular Churches unite with the Pope or with his legacy, in a city to celebrate the Eucharist and highlight its meaning.

The last Eucharistic Congresses serve as a reference: the one in Dublin (“The Eucharist, communion with Christ and among us”) which wanted to recover the ecclesiology of communion that was “the central and fundamental idea in the documents of the Council” . The Congress of Cebu (Philippines), which, with its reflection on the relationship between the Eucharist and the missionary dimension of the Church, is part of one of the most current aspects of pastoral work. Finally, the Budapest Congress, which identified the Eucharist as the source capable of offering Europe and the world life and future.
